Kevin O’Neill: In-Memoriam

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of Kevin O’Neill, who passed away on May 31st, 2024.

He died peacefully at home. He passed from this life to the next in the house he loved, with the park view he cherished, having received many family members and friends as caretakers and visitors in the days before.

A proud graduate of Rockhurst High School Class of ’76, Kevin matriculated down the field to Kansas University where he earned his degree. Kevin went on to become a partner at C&O Electric Sales, where he served for more than 35 years. He was devoted to the company’s ongoing success, and his customers, employees and partners were lifelong associates and friends.

The youngest son of Jack L. and Marjorie O’Neill, Kevin was born Feb. 23, 1958, entering the world at a whopping 11 pounds, 13 ounces and 24 inches long.

Kevin’s zest for life was evident in his every interaction and eclipsed only by his love for his family. He married Elizabeth Burke in 1985 and the two share four wonderful children and four equally wonderful grandchildren.

Kevin made it part of his life’s mission to promote his beloved Kansas City and all it has to offer, christening himself “Mr. Kansas City.” He was a tireless supporter of the Rockhurst Hawklets, KU Jayhawks and Kansas City Royals. He looked glamorous in his  Red Blazer, as he was a “Red Coater” for his Kansas City Chiefs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Susan Kathleen O’Neill and John “Patrick” O’Neill and Pat’s wife Mary Kay nee (Kodadek); brother-in-law, Roger L. Cobb.

Kevin is survived by his wife Liz and their children Kathleen (Kate) Downey (Travis); Jack O’Neill (Katie); Charlie O’Neill and Michael O’Neill.  Kevin adored his four granddaughters, Theresa, Zelie and Maggie Downey and Collins O’Neill.

Survivors also include his sisters Jeannine Herrera and Cindy Cobb. He was most fond of his in-laws, Carol and Tom Burke. He was a beloved uncle to countless O’Neill and Burke family nieces and nephews, whom he loved as his own. Kevin never met a stranger and those “new best friends” joined the throngs of “lifelong friends” and were welcomed into the “big fun” that was Kevin’s Hallmark.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 8, 2024 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 7231 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS 66208. Visitation at 11:00 am followed at Noon by Mass.

The family would like to thank Catholic Community Hospice for their help caring for Kevin. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Rockhurst High School
